Chronic Fatigue
&
Post Viral Illness
What is Chronic Fatigue or Post-Viral Illness?
Chronic Fatigue is a complex, multi-system condition characterized by profound fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest and can worsen with physical or mental exertion. CFS is often underdiagnosed because standard blood work comes back normal and symptoms can vary widely between individuals.
Post-viral illness (including long-COVID) follows a similar pattern. The acute illness triggers a cascade of inflammation and nervous system dysregulation which doesn’t fully resolve, resulting in persistent symptoms for months or years after the initial infection.
Common Symptoms
Significant and persistent fatigue (not relieved by rest)
Post-exertional malaise
Brain fog, poor concentration or memory concerns
Headaches or migraines
Joint or muscle pain
Weakness
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Flu-like symptoms
Digestive issues
How I Assess Chronic Fatigue
I start with a thorough history which includes what you have tried, your sleep and lifestyle patters and any investigations. Testing may include:
Comprehensive thyroid panel (including Hashimoto’s antibodies)
Adrenal and cortisol assessment
Nutrient panels (B12, Iron Panel, Ferritin, Vitamin D, Magnesium, Calcium)
Inflammatory markers
Investigation of underlying contributors e.g. mold illness, mitochondrial dysfunction, reactivated viral infections (e.g. EBV), SIBO, MCAS
Approach to Treatment
Treatment involves a slow, careful approach that is unique to the patient. My focus is on identifying and addressing underlying causes while supporting your body’s capacity to heal.
Identify root contributors (mold, infections, gut issues, thyroid, iron, diet etc.)
Nervous system support
Targeted nutrient repletion
Mitochondrial support
Sleep and circadian rhythm support
Frequently Asked Questions
I already had extensive testing and everything is normal. Can you help?
This is common with most patients. Normal standard bloodwork may not rule out the underlying causes of chronic fatigue. I address your case using your clinical history and functional testing (such as Organic Acid Testing).
Is this related to mold or MCAS?
Possibly. Mold illness and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome are frequently linked to chronic fatigue. I do a thorough intake at the first visit and start addressing underlying causes depending on the severity of your symptoms. Sometimes we need to focus on building you up first before clearing things out.
Do you treat chronic fatigue virtually?
Yes, I treat patients with chronic fatigue and post-viral illness virtually across Alberta, Nova Scotia & Ontario, as well as in-person in Toronto.
